We communicate about health every day—discussing ways to lower cholesterol and ward off certain diseases. As a company we need to practice what we preach, but we’re busy with families, clients, social engagements, and so forth.

Many of us manage to fit exercise into our schedules, but it may not be as often as we’d like. According to the CDC, two out of three Americans (approximately 60 percent) are not active at recommended levels. Why? Because for many of us, it’s not a priority and we lack motivation.

With that in mind, here are some tips from the PR world that we can apply toward living a healthy lifestyle:

  • Discipline: Just like agency life, working out regularly takes discipline. No one wants to go to the gym after a day filled with client meetings, document writing, and crisis management. But some days you have to go in early or stay late to get the job done, and the same goes for putting in that time at the gym.
  • Planning: Some clients are looking at long-term efforts that stretch three years down the road. I am not suggesting you plan exercise years in advance – after all, who knows what neat new exercise trend will come along – but I do think planning ahead, prioritizing your health and focusing on goals can lead to a healthier lifestyle.
  • Measurement: We are consistently tracking and analyzing results for our clients to see what worked, what didn’t, and what needs to change. This same process can be applied to your health and fitness goals.
  • Get Creative: I’ve found some pretty creative ways to connect my clients with the media. Applying that same creativity to menus and fitness routines (social media, anyone?) will ensure you are never bored and can reach your goals.
